Description and operation

Definitive Ecology’s STU/CR.DEG compact screening, grit separation and F.O.G. (Fat, Oil & Grease) separation plant can be supplied with wastewater for treatment by means of a pump or by gravity feed, depending on the application. The influent passes through the screen and suspended solids are retained on the surface: due to occlusion of the screen the upstream liquid level rises; when the level reaches a pre-determined value the screw responsible for cleaning the screen is started. While they are being transported out of the liquid, the screenings are washed (optional accessory) to reduce the organic matter contents. An additional screenings wash can be performed in the transport zone (optional accessory). Before being discharged, the screenings are compacted in the screw compaction zone. Wastewater that has passed through the screen enters the settling tank, where the grit is separated. Coarse and fine bubble aeration is used to optimise grit settling and flotation of F.O.G. substances. The grit deposited in the tank is lifted and dewatered before being unloaded by a shaftless screw. F.O.G. flotates are collected by a skimmer, which drains them through a dedicated pipe. The water level in the settling tank is predetermined to optimise grit separation and flotation of F.O.G. substances. Aeration is performed continuously with the ingress of the wastewater. Operation of the screw conveyors and grit lifting conveyor and the skimmer for F.O.G. flotates is controlled by a timer in accordance with the quantities of grit and F.O.G. present. The wastewater discharged from the plant can now be transferred to the downstream treatment stages.
